I strongly feel that democracy in India has been taken for granted many a times..there is no point cribbing about the evil poli 'tics' or the politicians everytime...People like us has our share too...I was follwing closely the GHMC(Greater Hyderabad Municpal Corporation) elections which is considered prestigious among all the political parties of Andhra Pradesh...Though these are local body elections, this has bought out the true picture of what does the so called educated, enlightened urban population think about elections in general..To start with, the voter turn out in the so called 'educated urban' society has been a shame...a mere 40%...people have preferred to sit at home and take rest on this 'holiday'...
What needs thinking is the outcome of such an election where not even half of the eligible voting population has not utilised their vote...and among those who have, atleast 25% are influenced by the influential freebies...liquor, food and money...whats humorous is that this percentage of votes is enough for the candidate to secure a majority...what a win!!!!....So, the mantra to win an election is much evident...Spend as much money as you can in influencing these 25% of voters who can fetch you a win...Dont even worry about the other people...they wont vote...neither they would raise any voice...except cribb silently about how bad the living conditions are and how worst the government administration is....afterall its ok not to vote...it has become a matter of choice rather than a compulsion...I would be happy if someone brings in a legislation, imposing hard sanctions on those who wont vote..like stripping them of their ration cards, no treatments at Government medical facilities, no guarantee of water or power supply...
India. A change, is much needed. It has to start from these educated urban polulation and trickle down to the grassroot levels...'You' should be the beginning....
